Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery :

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) is an advanced technique used to perform heart surgery through small incisions (usually 2 to 4 inches) rather than a large cut through the breastbone (sternotomy) as in traditional open-heart surgery. The goal is to reduce trauma, speed up recovery, and minimize pain, while still achieving the same surgical effectiveness.

Techniques Used in MICS :

1. Right Mini-Thoracotomy
Small incision on the right side of the chest
Used for Mitral valve repair/replacement, ASD closure, etc.

2. Partial Sternotomy
Only part of the breastbone is opened
Used for aortic valve or certain bypass surgeries

3. Port Access Surgery
Instruments and camera inserted through small ports
Robotic assistance may be used for high precision

4. Robotic-Assisted Cardiac Surgery
Surgeon controls robotic arms for high-precision work
Performed through very small keyhole incisions

Types of Procedures Done via MICS :

Minimally invasive techniques are commonly used for:
●  Mitral Valve Repair/Replacement
●  Aortic Valve Replacement
●  ASD/VSD Closure (hole in the heart)
●  CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting) in selected cases
●  Removal of Cardiac Tumors
●  Pericardial Window / Pericardiectomy
●  Maze procedure for Atrial Fibrillation

Benefits of MICS :

●  Less pain
●  Faster recovery
●  Smaller scars
●  Lower risk of infection
●  Less blood loss
●  Better cosmetic results
●  Shorter hospital stay
